Runner’s knee, or Patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS), is one of the most common causes of knee pain. Despite its name, it’s a condition not solely connected to runners, and can occur in anyone who puts a lot of stress on their knees. In the sports world, runners, skiers, and cyclists are most prone to runner’s knee, but it can also occur in individuals whose occupations involve frequent bending of the knee through squatting or climbing of stairs or ladders The most common symptom of runner’s knee is pain around or behind the kneecap (patella), especially when going up and down stairs or hills. .  Kneeling, sitting, bending and squatting are also painful and are often accompanied by a grinding or clicking when the knee is bent or straightened. Traditional treatment options for runner’s knee include stretching, RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation), strengthening exercises, rest and anti-inflammatory medication.  More recently, therapists, trainers and athletes are applying kinesiology tape to help alleviate the symptoms of runner’s knee, or to prevent it from recurring.  A few strips of kinesiology tape can help stabilize the patella, as well as reduce pain and inflammation. Kinesiology taping is especially popular with athletes as it can often allow them to continue training and competing as they recover from this overuse injury.
