Kinesiology Taping for Ankle Stability

According to the American College of Sports Medicine, ankle sprains account for almost half of all sports injuries. The most common type of ankle sprain is an inversion sprain, where the ankle rolls outward and the foot rolls inward, damaging the ligaments on the outside of the ankle. Eversion sprains occur when the ankle rolls inward, stretching or tearing the ligaments on the inside of the ankle. These ankle injuries commonly happen during running or jumping, but can also happen when simply missing a step or walking on uneven ground.

If you suspect an ankle sprain it should be evaluated by a medical or sports professional.  Depending on the severity of the injury they may recommend refraining from certain activities for a few days up to a few months.  Not allowing the necessary time to rest or rehabilitate the area increases the risk of re-injuries later.

Other recommendations include icing and stabilizing the ankle with external support. Traditionally, this involved strapping the ankle tightly with non-elastic athletic tape. This type of strapping can only be worn for short periods of time as it’s compression effect reduces bloodflow to the injured area. Kinesiology tape, on the other hand, is thin, lightweight and flexible, allowing it to be worn around the clock during recovery from an injury.  In the early stages of an ankle injury, kinesiology tape can help reduce swelling and relieve pain. When returning to activity it can be used to provide  support and without restricting circulation and range of motion. After a return to normal activity, continued kinesio taping during exercise provides extra stability and can help prevent future injuries.
